After months of planning and preparation, the Amana Inclusive Technology Initiative (AITI) officially began its journey to make artificial intelligence (AI) accessible to everyone—starting from the heart of Maiduguri.
Founded by Jimeh Saleh, AITI is a nonprofit organization dedicated to democratizing access to AI and other emerging technologies across Nigeria and beyond. Its mission is simple yet urgent: to ensure that no one is left behind in the AI revolution, especially communities facing linguistic, economic, or educational barriers.
Last week marked a major milestone as Amana hosted its first AI Advantage Workshop in Maiduguri. The training brought together students, journalists, young creatives, and entrepreneurs to explore how AI tools can be used in Hausa for learning, business growth, and civic engagement.
“Seeing the excitement on participants’ faces as they explored AI in their own language for the first time was deeply moving,” said Jimeh Saleh. “It reaffirmed what we stand for — trust, inclusion, and innovation rooted in local realities.”
The workshop demonstrated how language can either bridge or block access to technology. By introducing AI tools and workflows in local languages, participants began to see technology as something for them, not beyond them.
As Amana moves forward, the initiative is building a network of community tech hubs across Nigeria to advance AI literacy in local languages. The organization is also developing one of the largest local language AI databases in underrepresented African languages — a crucial step toward ethical and inclusive innovation.
The success of this first workshop signals the beginning of a larger movement — one that connects educators, innovators, and changemakers under a shared vision: making AI truly inclusive and accessible for everyone.
Amana extends its heartfelt thanks to all the participants, facilitators, and partners who made this first step possible.
